Anchored in Gig Harbor: Commencement Bank’s Commitment to Community

Seated in one of the South Sound’s most vibrant waterfront communities, Commencement Bank’s Gig Harbor branch may be their newest location, but their roots in this community run deep. This year, as they celebrate 20 years in business and their third year in Gig Harbor, they are proud to say that their presence is built on relationships that started long before their branch doors opened. Most of the branch team members live in Gig Harbor, and that local connection shows up in everything they do. “This isn’t just where we work, this is home,” said Allisha McVay, Commencement Bank’s Gig Harbor Vice President, Market Manager and Relationship Banking Officer.

From the beginning, Commencement Bank has believed that being a community bank means more than offering financial services. It means showing up, giving back, and staying actively involved in the places they serve - and they work hard to ensure that philosophy comes to life every day. Whether it’s supporting the Gig Harbor Farmers Market Kids Corner, participating in the Maritime Festival, or partnering with organizations like the Gig Harbor BoatShop and the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, their team is committed to being part of what makes this community special. You can also catch them joining in the fun at the downtown Halloween bash, helping spread cheer with their stunning holiday light display, and supporting the next generation of leaders through Gig Harbor Young Professionals. Their partnerships with the Gig Harbor Waterfront Alliance and involvement in downtown events reflect their belief that a thriving local economy starts with an actively engaged community.

Commencement Bank doesn’t just show up; giving back is equally important to them. They are honored to support organizations that make a tangible difference, including Communities in Schools of Peninsula, the American Cancer Society, and the South Sound CARE Foundation. From the Ross Tello LEGO Drive and Lions Club Giving Tree to supporting the Homestead Community and Permission to Start Dreaming, they are inspired by the generous spirit of Gig Harbor.

The branch itself has also become a gathering place, which is something they are especially proud of. They have opened their parking lot and branch space for community use, hosting everything from a Downtown Waterfront Alliance beer garden to Cruise the Narrows car meetups. They have welcomed local board meetings, supported fundraising walks, and provided a place for neighbors to come together.

At Commencement Bank, they believe strong communities are built by connecting with the individuals and organizations who shape the heart of the community. That’s why they make it a priority to stay engaged with local businesses, support events that bring people downtown, and invest their time and resources into the people and organizations that make Gig Harbor thrive. At the end of the day, being a community bank means not just being part of the community, but being part of making it stronger.
