Compassionate care for local seniors

On the Key Peninsula, where neighbors still look out for one another, The Mustard Seed Project has been quietly changing lives since 2006. What began as a simple idea to help local elders remain in their homes and community as they age has grown into a trusted network of programs, volunteers, and partnerships that keep seniors connected, supported, and thriving.

Programs are tailored to the challenges of this rural area, where resources and transportation can be limited. “We listen closely to our community and build programs around what people truly need,” says Programs Manager Julie Crane. “Our goal is to make sure every senior has the choice to age safely and comfortably where they feel at home.”

Transportation is one of the organization’s most essential services. Volunteer drivers provide rides for seniors and people with disabilities to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other important destinations. A wheelchair-accessible shuttle helps reach even more residents. For many, this program is a lifeline that allows them to maintain independence and avoid isolation.

The Mustard Seed Café, located at the Crandall Center, has become another cornerstone of connection. This welcoming senior center offers a warm meal and a place to gather with friends, attend exercise classes, or take part in community activities. The café shuttle brings people together twice a week, creating a space where seniors can stay active and engaged. One guest summed it up perfectly: “I hope you have a place like this when you’re older, where they take good care of you, like you take care of us.”

The Village is central to the organization’s vision as the Key Peninsula’s first assisted living and memory care community. Built on the Green House Project model, The Village emphasizes smaller, home-like settings that nurture relationships between residents and staff. Each space is designed to support dignity, independence, and a true sense of belonging—values that guide every part of The Mustard Seed Project’s work.

The Mustard Seed Project’s approach to elder care is unique because it’s shaped around the needs of a small, rural community. By offering both in-home support and long-term residential options, the organization ensures that seniors have real choices as they age.

Partnerships also play a major role in expanding their reach. Collaborations with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, and local schools have brought health clinics, intergenerational activities, and art programs to the community. During the holidays, local students write hundreds of cards for seniors, and volunteers deliver over 150 gift bags each year.

Volunteers remain the foundation of the organization, helping with everything from meal delivery and yard care to home maintenance and event support. Whether someone gives an afternoon or a full day each week, their efforts make a real difference in the lives of Key Peninsula seniors.

The Mustard Seed Project continues to grow and evolve, always guided by the needs of the people it serves. Its integrity, compassion, and collaboration have created a legacy of care that strengthens the entire Key Peninsula community.
