Exciting changes are on the horizon for Gig Harbor as the Peninsula Metropolitan Park District (PenMet Parks) prepares to open the highly anticipated PenMet Parks Recreation Center in 2025. This state-of-the-art facility will bring 65,000 square feet of indoor space dedicated to fitness, sports, and community activities, creating a hub for residents of all ages.
Designed as a true gathering place, the PenMet Parks Recreation Center will feature a multi-use turf field for various sports, an indoor walking and jogging track for year-round exercise, and three courts for basketball, pickleball, and volleyball—perfect for both competitive games and casual play. Multi-purpose rooms will also host fitness classes, skill-based programs, and community events.
A unique addition is the Peninsula Art League’s curated art wall, which showcases work from local artists and enhances the space with a creative touch. Outside, the PenMet Parks Recreation Center campus will feature a large event lawn that serves as a youth soccer field and an extension of the Cushman Trail, offering safe access for walkers and cyclists. To add to the fun, a mini golf course inspired by the Pacific Northwest will provide an engaging experience for families and visitors.
With a reach of over 440,000 people, the PenMet Parks Recreation Center will offer programs for all ages, including adaptive recreation options, to ensure accessibility for underserved communities. “The Recreation Center will be a destination for everyone, where families and friends can come together to play and connect,” says Ally Bujacich, Executive Director of PenMet Parks. PenMet Parks will provide assistance programs for eligible residents to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent participation.
Sustainability is a major focus; the PenMet Parks Recreation Center is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards, incorporating recycled materials, solar power, and energy-efficient HVAC and electrical systems. Ample windows and skylights flood the space with natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere.
The $31.6 million project is funded through PenMet Parks reserves ($11.6 million), a Limited Tax General Obligation (LTGO) bond ($16 million), and $4 million in public and private donations. Notably, the bond fits within the district’s debt capacity, meaning it won’t increase local taxes.
PenMet Parks invites community members and businesses to get involved through volunteer opportunities, sponsorships, and donations. They are also hiring for multiple positions, particularly in customer service and fitness roles.
