Here in Gig Harbor, we are fortunate to have so many veterans living in our wonderful community who continue to give of themselves time and time again. To show the community’s appreciation for what they have done for both our country and for our community, The Gig Harbor Veterans Recognition Committee is honored to present a program to both entertain and honor these veterans.
The third annual Veterans’ Day Celebration is scheduled to take place Wednesday, November 11, at the Uptown Shopping Center in Gig Harbor. From 11am to 1:15pm, the event aims to honor Gig Harbor area veterans and their friends and families in a 1940s radio-style format and will include a Flag Ceremony, Color Guard and music, interview and speakers, snack lunch and goodie bag, which you can enjoy from the convenience and safety of your car.
Those wishing to attend are asked to please RSVP online at Bit.ly/GigHarborVeteransDay2020. The event is free to everyone who attends but you must RSVP, and space is limited to 140 cars in the Uptown parking lot (in the back next to Home Goods). For those who are unable to attend in person, the show will be available live on KGHP 89.9FM and 105.7FM, and on Facebook and YouTube.
Gig Harbor Councilmember Robyn Denson will be the MC and interviewing the guest speakers, which include Col. Erin Stain-Pyne, USAF, Wing Commander at JBLM; and Captain Richard G. Rhinehart, Commanding Officer, Naval Base Kitsap, Bremerton. There will be several others who plan to speak live or pre-recorded. Highlights of the event include live music as well as inspiring speakers representing all branches of the military, according to Pat Schmidt of the Gig Harbor Veterans Recognition Committee and organizer of the event. “Our veterans appreciate the recognition of what they have given during their years of service. And they appreciate the community’s efforts on this special day.”
This year’s primary sponsors are PenMet Parks, the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs of Gig Harbor, Uptown Shopping Center and the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation. No additional financial support sponsors are needed for the event, but according to Pat, they would love to have items for their goodie bags to show your support of the program. (They are anticipating 300 veterans to be in attendance.) Bags, hats, flags, water, snacks, clip chips, pens; anything useful to our veterans are appreciated. You are asked to email GigHarborVeteransDay@gmail.com if you are interested in providing items.
“We know that the community of Gig Harbor supports our veterans, so even though you might not be a veteran, please listen to our program on KGHP-FM 89.3 or Livestream on Facebook and YouTube to hear about these remarkable men and women,” encourages Pat. “It will make you proud!”
